Taste the very best of Sabah, Borneo.

“Sedap” is Malay for “delicious” – a word that you will use time and time again on our Fruit in SabahCulinary Adventure Tour. The beautiful thing about food in Malaysian Borneo is the fusion of different tastes and influences, from traditional Malay dishes to Chinese delicacies to Indian curry classics, Borneo has it all. Our local food addicts have sourced the best local eateries and restaurants to create this tasty tour, taking you from the Chicken Rice of Kota Kinabalu, to the mouth-watering sea-food of Kudat. Along the way, we will try local fruits in season, such as the stinky yet sumptuous Durian, the King Fruit of Asia. You will have the opportunity to taste the Weird and Wonderful edible delights that Borneo has to offer, experiencing the warmth of the locals and the rich culture as you go. If you like good food, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

Day 1 : Kota Kinabalu; City Tour, Filipino market

Menu: Chicken Rice, Barbecued Fish, Satay Ayam.

Pick-up from either hotel or airport, depending on prior arrangement. Proceed for a delicious chicken rice lunch at Wiya Chicken Rice shop, locally famed for it’s tender chicken and mouth-watering rice, cooked in the juices of the chicken. After, head into the city center to see some of the sights around Kota Kinabalu, including the spectacular central Mosque and beautiful Chinese temples. After the City Tour, head to the Fillipino market. Browse the handicrafts and take in the ocean views before proceeding to the outdoor food area. Here, taste fresh barbecued tuna steak, succulent barbecued squid (or “Sotong” in Malay), and other fresh seafood cooked before your eyes, caught that very morning by the stall owners. Fiery honey chicken wings (“Sayap Ayam”) and chicken satay (“Satay Ayam”) are also available. “Tongkeng Ayam” is a must-try for the brave (skewered chicken “butt” in a sweet marinade). Add a whole fresh coconut for thirst refreshment to the mix and you’re in culinary heaven. After dinner, transfer to hotel for overnight stay.

Day 2 : Lokkawi Wildlife Park, Donggongong, Beaufort, Klias River Cruise, Kota Kinabalu

Menu: Fish soup; Fish Head Curry; Pau’s; Bak Kut Teh.

Head to Kedai Kopi Wan Wan, where you can enjoy fish in Hot & Sour, Tom Yam or clear soup, or try their famous Kon Lau Mein- fried thin noodles with sauce and chicken mince. We will then transfer to Lokkawi Wildlife park to witness some of the exotic animals of Borneo. Explore the Aviary, where birds fly freely around you and mouse deer graze in the flora and fauna. After working up an appetite, transfer to Krishna’s Fish Head Curry restaurant (reviews here and here) for lunch. Here, try delights such as crispy fried Quail, roti canai, roti tissu (fried flat bread with curry dip) and, of course, sumptuous fish head curry with a variety of condiments.  After lunch, transfer 1.5 hrs overland to the small town of Beaufort. Here, we will visit Restoran Malaysia, a popular local hang-out and the BEST place to get fresh, steaming Pau’s in the whole of Malaysia. Pau’s are soft buns with a variety of fillings; try Coconut (Kelapa), chicken (Ayam), beef (Daging), Pandan (sweet & buttery to taste) and Durian flavour. Accompany the Pau’s with some hot Teh Tarik (literally “pulled tea”; tea sweetened with condensed milk, before being “pulled” to create a frothy texture), Kit Chai Ping (cool, refreshing lime drink) or some traditional Kopi ‘O’ (black coffee). After a tasty tea-break, transfer to the Klias river, where we begin a river cruise in search of the Proboscis Monkey and the Macaque. After dark, continue cruising to see thousands of fireflies lighting up the mangrove trees around the river. After the cruise, we head back to Kota Kinabalu, where you can try some Bak Kut Teh in a local restaurant; a pork stock soup with a complex mix of herbs and spices. Return to hotel for overnight stay.

Proceed on the Journey to  Kampung Bavanggazo, where we will catch a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous Rungus tribal people of Borneo, as they show us their traditional longhouse and their daily activities, such as weaving and pounding rice to remove the husks. We will then pay a visit to the local bee farm, where you can taste the fresh liquid gold straight from the hive. The local community bottles and sells the honey, so you will also have the opportunity to take some home with you. After our bee farm tour, we will head to the wet market to select some of Kudat’s famous fish for lunch. Once we have chosen our raw ingredients, we will take them to a cafe stall, where our seafood will be prepared and cooked to perfection for us. At dinner, transfer to an open air jetty area, where the owners (a local Malaysian-Chinese family) prepare the most delicious ocean food in Borneo; fresh fish, clams, prawns, squid and succulent Lobster. It is everything a seafood enthusiast could dream of! Try the tangy sea-snails, fried and seasoned to perfection: simply tug them out of their shell and eat whole, as our guide will demonstrate!
